(As an aside, it happens that I've been rereading some Heinlein, and this reminds me strongly of The Tale of the Adopted Daughter from Time Enough for Love, which I got through again, last week. That comparison is a very good one; when I get to the end of that story, I always tear me up and come to a complete halt for quite a while.)
