It must be getting time for Christmas, because the odd gift ideas are starting to pop up everywhere. PG Tips has announced the "ReadyWhenUR Kettle", an SMS-enabled kettle you can switch on from your mobile phone.

A spokeswoman for PG told Ananova: "It could revolutionise tea-time. Now there is no excuse for not putting the kettle on."

But why exactly you would want this function is something of a mystery to us. After all, it isn't going to fetch your favourite mug from the cupboard, rummage around for the last teabag and combine all the relevant ingredients once the water is boiled, is it?

It's good to know that top scientists are on top of important research and development like this. We truly live in a modern world.

Yes, but it saves all that tedious hopping from one foot to the other while you wait for the kettle to boil. Instead you can waddle from one foot to the other as you make your way from the sofa to the kitchen.

I'm curious, though... Does it have the sense not to start heating the kettle if there's no water in it? Does it SMS you back to say "NO WTR. COME N FIL ME UP."? Or does it just automatically lean over the sink and reach out a robot arm to turn on the tap? =:o}

Why do I have this sudden image of me commanding a robot army: "You, you and you, into the rigging! And you — put the kettle on!"

What, you can't multi-task? Maybe it should be SMF (Son-of-a-MainFrame)?

Well, I suspect because a serious tea drinker would have their favorite mug and tea right there next to the kettle. I know that I do. (well, lately it's been my favorite cofee mug and coffee next to the grinder and kettle but my chai is also there.)

Clearly you aren't a serious enough teadrinker.

I must add that I was highly amused that the very first thing the alarm contraption that Wallace & Gromit made in an emergency was put the kettle on. ;-)

Ok, I said I was offended by that other thing, but this is just TOO far. TOO FAR, I SAY!

I must be satisfied on the field of honour. Snuggles at dawn!

I've heard of tea-mobile but this is ridiculous... :-)

Um. But you still have to fill it with water first, don't you?

I mostly wanted to comment that that's an awesome icon. ;)

LOL--makes me think of Ray Bradbury's "The Murderer" or "The Veldt". I'm not surprised that there's a potential market for this.

Only if you also get a web-activated soda machine, with accurate heuristics as to the temperature of the contents.

This goes a little far, but it's not completely nuts like the traffic signal chair.
