Moving on up to the East Side (of GA 400)

As you may or may not be aware, kitanzi and I are planning on moving into a new apartment. We've been wanting to for some time, as the place we are living in currently is, while not exactly cramped, lacking in several features that we'd really like to have in our place to live. For one thing, it lacks a proper guest room, as those of you who have stayed with us over the years will know. It's also really too small to have more than a couple of friends over a time, precluding us from ever, say, hosting a house filk or having any kind of gathering more than a very small group. Plus, to be honest, we've not been very happy with our current property management.

It's funny, but when I sat down and figured it out, I've been at this address for longer than any place I've lived since I became an independent adult. I resist change, for good or ill. I like my comfortable routines. But it's definitely time to take that step. When I first moved into this apartment, my life was very different. I had been sleeping on telynor's living room couch for 3 months after breaking up with deidrecorwyn, and was preparing myself to live alone for the first time ever. kitanzi and I had just started dating, but we were long-distance secondaries and there wasn't any real though that that state of affairs would change. I spent a great deal of time in this cavernous empty apartment feeling lonely and isolated -- not yet comfortable exploring my newly won freedom.

There's a lot of memories packed into these 750 square feet. More memories than you'd imagine five and a half years could contain. I'm looking forward to spending the next year filling our new place with memories as well.

Congrats on the move! It's hard to leave a place, but knowing that there are new memories to be built makes it easier, doesn't it?

The move date is Friday, July 13. We're going to hire movers to do the actual load-in and load-out, but we may well want to have people over either before for packing, or after for unpacking. :)

Yay for new digs! So tell us about the new place, size, layout, y'know, that kind of stuff, for the folks who likely won't see it for some time but would like to visualize it.

It's about 3 miles from our current complex, and is newer and nicer all around. About 70% bigger square-foot wise (1270 v. 750), has a forest overlook view and an attached garage, and spacious bathrooms. The kitchen, while not huge, is bigger and better laid out than our current, and has more cabinet space. The living room/diing room area is one large rectangular space, which will be ideal for having housefilks and other gatherings, we hope.

It's also about 3/4 of a mile from my office, meaning I'll be able to walk to work on nice days, if I choose.

Oh, sounds great! Layout is everything with kitchens.. you can actually have plenty of space and still have a kitchen be awful to work in. And a forest overlook! And a garage! (Does anyone actually put cars in those things??) Oooh! And walking to work. I *really* envy that. Yesterday I biked to work and back, but it took a ridiculously long time (too many street lights and too far- 20 miles each way).

I like open plans too- I had a combined kitchen/dining area/living room in my last apartment (as Kitanzi may recall!) and in the house, we just took out a wall so we now have a dining area at one end of the living room. We originally did it to make room for stairs to the new upper story, but it really opened up the space amazingly.

It has a PANTRY! It has storage space, and a counter between the kitchen and living room area which will give us more useful surface space on both sides, and a BIG bathtub, and... yeah, I'm looking forward to this. :)

Excellent! Pantries definitely rock. Counter between kitchen and the living room? This really does sound like my place in Manchester! Except that it's significantly bigger. :).

Yeah, I bet that made quite a difference. We used to be able to see marks on the ceiling where there was a wall between our living and dining rooms (before we bought the house). Having one "great hall" is so much better.

I'll try and come help with the packing. TG is that weekend, so I am rather involved with that. And there's all the RL stuff, too. But you guys helped me at a bad time, so least I can do is return the favour.

I got tired of not having a proper guest room too, and renovated the basement last winter. The guest room was only one part of the reno. It was long overdue, and a big job, but now there is a nice room to offer to filkers, with a three-piece bathroom nearby. None have actually stayed yet, since the Brits wanted to be downtown after FKO or just didn't know Phil and I well enough until they came for a musical evening afterwards just before they left. But I did just offer to Peter Alway who might be in TO this summer.

Speaking of which - I understand why you cannot offer me a billet in July! With a move in mid-July, I am surprised you will have time to filk. But the B&Bs I find online in Atlanta are as expensive as the conference hotel, or too out of the way for someone without a car. AND they have large cancellation fees in summer. So I would love to get offered a couch by a local filker, or a tip about an inexpensive place to stay on July 20th and 21st.
