It is said that given an assertion, there are certain types of proof which, rather than strengthening the assertion, weaken it. The best example would be the statement "all humans are less than 100 feet tall." Generally, it's easy to see that it's true. But if a man grew to 99 1/2 feet, there would be some serious doubt to the strength of the assertion, despite that his datum continued to prove its truth.
